Official Rules and Regulations
Iroquois Amphitheater - Main Stage
 

 

Registration and check-in will be held at the festival location (New Cut Road near Kenwood Drive) at 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 26, 2008.  Each contestant will receive a number upon registration.  Order of performance will be determined by a random drawing of those numbers at 12:00 PM.  Contests will begin immediately after this drawing.

Individual Championship on Mountain and Hammered Dulcimer:
Registration Fee:  $10 per Person (per competition)

  1. Contests are open to anyone except those who are performing as a billed or paid entertainer during Kentucky Music Weekend, 2006. 

  2. Contestant agrees to display an attitude of good sportsmanship at all times.

  3. Each contest is limited to 20 participants.

  4. Contestants must play only acoustic instruments.

  5. Contestants will not be allowed to take two instruments on stage.

  6. A MEDLEY OF TUNES is NOT acceptable.

  7. Contestants are NOT allowed to speak on stage.

  8. Contestants will need a total of four songs prepared, two for the first round and, if chosen, two for the second round.

  9. Judges will not see contestants during the competition.   Judges will not tally their own score sheets.  

Awards will be presented immediately following the contest.


Judges will use the following criteria during the contest:

40 points

Arrangement – Contestant’s version of the tune selected.  Difficulty and originality will be considered.

   

40 points

Execution, Tuning – Fingering, picking and dynamics will be considered.  Is the instrument in tune?

   

10 points

Show Value – The music should be played with life and feeling.  It should not appear listless nor should it drag

   

10 points

Overall Impression

  • First Place Grand Champion Mountain Dulcimer - Trophy and Full Festival Ticket for the Walnut Valley Festival ($70 value) and Free Contest Entry Registration in the Nationals. Plus a McSpadden mountain dulcimer!
